MICK Gentleman says construction work on Constitution Avenue will deliver the framework for the visionary design of the corridor.

“The long-term vision for Constitution Avenue was always more than a strategic road corridor, with the objective to create an appealing urban space for moving through, working in and socialising.

“The upgrade of Constitution Avenue, between Vernon Circle and Anzac Parade, will provide major public transport, active transport and landscape improvements for the community.

“A dedicated bus lane in each direction between London Circuit and Anzac Parade and bus priority at some signalised intersections will improve traffic flow and frequency of buses.

“A separated three metre wide shared path on the southern side of Constitution Avenue, with improved pedestrian and cycling crossing points at signalised traffic intersections will help enhance the integration of pedestrians, cyclists and other active travellers into the urban precinct.

“Enhanced lighting, street furniture and a tree-lined central median will also help develop the avenue into a space for people to meet as well as encourage increased residential and commercial development along the avenue.

“Landscaping and shared path connections between Constitution Avenue and Vernon Circle are also being undertaken as part of the upgrade. These works will allow for the future completion of the link.

“This is an exciting redevelopment and the upgrade of Constitution Avenue will ensure the necessary infrastructure is in place to support the visionary design for the avenue.

“Constitution Avenue is a key element of the Walter Burley Griffin Master Plan and, as the third leg of the Parliamentary Triangle, the road is significant in the implementation of the Griffin Legacy.

“In celebration of the Centenary of Canberra, the Australian Government gifted $42 million to the ACT Government for the upgrade of Constitution Avenue.

“The upcoming construction work will deliver the framework for this visionary design which will be realised over future years as residential and commercial development along the corridor progresses,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
