THE Telopea Park School Parents and Citizens Association (Telopea P&C) is inviting the local community to participate in an information meeting about the loss of land from the school.
Representatives from the Land Development Agency will be present to explain the decision and answer parents’ and community members’ questions about the development.
Earlier this year the ACT Government transferred the ownership of the land where the Telopea Park School’s tennis courts sit from the Education Directorate to the Land Development Agency. This transfer of land was done without informing or consulting the school community.
“The government has promised funds to build new sporting facilities, but the land grab significantly reduces the open space available to children at our already-crowded public school,” said Paul Haesler, President of Telopea P&C.
“We are also concerned about the safety of children in and around the school with increased traffic flows as a result of development on this part of the school’s land on an already dangerous intersection,” he added. The intersection was in the top 150 most dangerous intersections in the ACT in 2014.
The land in question was originally transferred to the public school in the 1970s in recognition of the schools growing population of students, which is continuing to grow today.
Parents and carers of children at Telopea Park School will be leaving leaflets with residents in the surrounding areas in the coming week inviting them to attend the meeting.
