MICK Gentleman says the AIHW Youth Justice in Australia 2013–14 report shows fewer young people are coming into contact with the youth justice system in the ACT.
“This data show our programs and people are continuing to step up for vulnerable young people,” Mick said.
“The report shows there was a reduction in the number of young people under supervision, from 250 in 2004/05 to 146 in 2013/14.
“In addition, the number of young people experiencing youth justice supervision for the first time declined from 126 young people in 2009/10 to 59 in 2013/14.
“This shows improvements we are putting in place in Bimberi and through The Blueprint for Youth Justice in the ACT 2012-22 are having a positive effect.
“The strategies in the Blueprint are about preventing or diverting young people from coming into contact with, or being further involved in the youth justice system.
“The ACT Government recognises the importance of providing targeted, early intervention and outreach programs for youth justice.
“We want to provide the best support for vulnerable young people to make positive life choices,” Mick concluded.
