ACT Policing General Duties officers from Gungahlin apprehended four drink-drivers – two females and two males – during patrol duties in Canberra’s outer northern suburbs overnight (April 1-2).

The first of the four apprehensions was on the Barton Highway at Gold Creek around 9.30pm, when the male driver recorded .052 grams of alcohol per 210 litres of breath, a low-range reading.

Around 10.15pm at the same location, a 29-year-old woman from Crace recorded a reading of .094.

Around 11.50, police patrolling on Flemington Road in Mitchell saw a silver Mazda being driven erratically. The driver, a 21-year-old woman from Franklin, recorded a reading of 0.158. The woman was a provisional driver and therefore restricted to a zero blood alcohol content.

In the fourth drink-driving incident, police stopped a Subaru on Wanganeen Avenue in Nicholls around 4am today (April 2), when the 36-year-old male driver returned a positive screening test for alcohol. He later returned a reading of 0.084.

All four drivers will be summonsed to appear in Court on a later date.

The Acting Officer-in-Charge of Traffic Operations, Sergeant Tracey Duck, said she was appalled by these four positive results within a seven-hour period, and that this anti-social behaviour should receive widespread community condemnation.

“The community must share our level of concern because it is only by making drink-driving socially unacceptable that we have a chance of preventing tragedies,” Sgt Duck said.

“If any or all of these alcohol-affected drivers had been in a collision, then it would have been a tragic and wretched Easter for those involved.”
