THE ACT Rural Fire Service, on behalf of ACTEW Water, will conduct a hazard reduction burn at the Mt. Stromlo Water Treatment Plant tomorrow as part of their Bushfire Operational Plan.
The burn will eliminate the build-up of bushfire fuel surrounding the site to a manageable level, reducing the threat of wildfire impacting the water treatment plant and neighbouring offices.
Angie Drake of ACTEW Water said that the hazard reduction burn, as part of a larger Bushfire Plan, is crucial in protecting Canberra’s vital water and sewerage assets.
“These hazard reduction burns are a way to protect our staff, the community and the environment from potential harm which could be caused by bushfires that have the potential to seriously impact on water and sewerage assets like catchments, dams, reservoirs, pump stations and treatment plants,” Angie said.
“The Stromlo Water Treatment Plant (SWTP) is a primary component of ACTEW Water’s network and service delivery. The bushfire threat to the site is well known, with the Mt Stromlo area heavily impacted during the 2003 Canberra fires.”
Two small areas around the Treatment Plant will be lit under controlled conditions. Effective control lines have already be set by ACTEW Water staff.
Burning will commence from mid-morning and conclude just after lunch.
