Famous for a reason: the weekend in music

CANBERRA born and bred pianist, composer, educator, conductor and two-time ARIA winner Sally Whitwell is bringing to town a second program of classical music works by women, joined by cellist Sally Maer.

Fresh from her ARIA Awards performance which paid tribute to queen of rock Chrissy Amphlett, Whitwell says, “You will often hear people in the classical music world say ‘These works by women composers of the past aren’t famous for a reason’…what rubbish! They’re not well known simply because women in those times hadn’t the same opportunities as men.” They’ll be performing “Three Poems for Cello and Piano” by Canberra composer Sally Greenaway. “In Her Shoes 2 (music by women composers)”, All Saints Anglican Church, Ainslie, 3pm, Sunday, December 8, tickets at the door.

Lanyon’s Christmas Carols and Picnic will be held from 5–9pm this Sunday December 8 at Lanyon Homestead Tharwa Drive, Tharwa, with music from the Sing Australia Choir and Tuggeranong Valley Band. The homestead will be lit by candles and decorated for a 19th century Christmas, there’ll be a kids’ activity tent and a sausage sizzle or you can bring your own picnic to enjoy in the beautiful Lanyon gardens. $10 per car, bookings not required.

The Date Brothers will be playing play Gypsy Jazz Guitar at the Artists’ Shed, 14 Foster Street Queanbeyan from 7:30pm this Saturday, December 7. This style was pioneered by Django Reinhardt in the 30s and 40s and Ian Date is regarded and as Australia’s best exponent of this style. Tickets at the door.

Ray White Belconnen presents “Loungin’ by the Lake” at the Belconnen Arts Centre, from 3.45pm this Sunday, December 8. Also supported by Bike Culture Belconnen, Staging Connections and Nova Multimediadoors it’s billed as a fun-filled outdoor concert on the Shores of Lake Ginninderra. Coordinated by local resident Libby Oakes-Ash, the event is being held in support of the Cure For Life Foundation-accelerating treatments for brain cancer. Music will be by Shades of Monday, Last Minute Jazz, The Canberra Chordsmen and the Ginninderra Wind Orchestra with MC Paul Parolo from the Spectrum Big Band and special guest Sarah Mamalai. This Saturday, December 7, at 7.30pm in Wesley Music Centre, James Huntingford (piano and harpsichord) will present a variety concert with Alexander Nicholls (cello), Aaron Chew and Andrew Rumsey (both on piano), and the Luminescence Chamber Choir. They’re pretty much our brightest and our best. The program will include works from the 16th century to contemporary arrangements of interest.
