A police sergeant tasered a 42-year-old man early this morning after he emerged carrying a knife from a house in Evatt, where he was holed up for over an hour.

Police-afp-cops-9720-400x266Police from the Belconnen and Gungahlin patrols went to the house after an emergency call reported that someone might have been shot there.

Officers approached the residence on foot wearing ballistic vests and encountered a man who appeared intoxicated and claimed to have a firearm.

Police say that during negotiations with the man, he emerged suddenly from the house shortly after 2am and stepped aggressively towards police, hiding an item behind his back that was later found to be a 20cm kitchen knife.

He was then tasered by one of the attending sergeants, arrested and taken to the ACT Watch House, where he was assessed and cleared by ACT Ambulance officers.

He will appear before the ACT Magistrates Court this morning to be charged with Possess Offensive Weapon with Intent.
