Literary greats honoured in public art

QUEANBEYAN City’s public art makeover is continuing with Sydney artist Adam Long turning a power box outside the Library into a colourful celebration of the region’s writers.

Long grew up in Canberra and says he loves street art projects and converting power boxes and traffic signal boxes into public art. He has also recently been commissioned by Woollahra City Council in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

“I’m really happy with the books, they bring a quirky, and fun dimension to the streetscape,” he says.

“I selected the theme of a bundle of books tied up with string to reflect the Library’s location.”

The book titles in the art project included the much-loved classic My Brilliant Career by author Miles Franklin and Queanbeyan history books by Rex Cross and Errol Lea-Scarlett.

Queanbeyan City Library manager Peter Conlon says there are little notes with quotes from the books.

“This is a great project, we’re really happy with it and hope to work more with Adam in the future,” said Mr Conlon. I’m sure it will delight many people and also serve as a useful pointer to our presence in Crawford Street,” he says.

“It’s fitting that Miles Franklin, who is in the Queanbeyan Cultural Honours Gallery, which is on permanent display at The Q Performing Arts Centre, should have her Australian classic at the top of the pile.”
