ACT Parks and Conservation Service is advising the public that from Tuesday 10 March 2015 multiple hazard reduction burns will be conducted across the ACT, weather permitting.

The burns will be conducted over the next several weeks and will cover over 7,000 hectares of land to the east, south, and west of Canberra. For the duration of the burns significant amounts of smoke is expected in the sky across the ACT. ACT Parks and Conservation Service is now able to conduct large scale hazard reduction burns due to the mild summer which has created suitable conditions.

The first burn will be south of the Googong Reservoir (281 ha). Following the completion of the Googong burn, and depending on fuel moisture conditions, the following burns in northern Namadgi National Park, north of Bendora Dam, will be implemented: Blundells (115 ha), Warks Road (261 ha), and the Hardy Range (383 ha).

Given the large amount of smoke expected with these burns, people with asthma, other chronic respiratory and/or chronic cardiac diseases should not perform vigorous exercise and should, if possible, stay inside if affected by the smoke. People with asthma in particular should continue their medication and consult their general practitioner if they have any difficulties.

Before any burns are undertaken major stakeholders, including the Emergency Services Agency, the Australian Federal Police, Air Traffic Control, Roads ACT and the Bureau of Meteorology are advised.
