The Commonwealth coughs up for some animal fences and traffic lights under Black Spot funding

ASSISTANT Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs and Senator Zed Seselja have announced $2.7 million in funding for 4 Black Spot projects across Canberra.

“These projects are expected to prevent 25 injury crashes over 10 years, delivering economic benefits of around $18 million,” Mr Briggs said.

“Black Spot projects target dangerous roads to save lives and reduce road trauma, ensuring Australia’s roads are made safer and more productive for all road users,” Zed said.

The Australian Capital Territory panel, which reviews priorities for the programme includes representatives of the National Capital Authority, Pedal Power, Motorcycle Riders Association of the ACT, Australasian College of Road Safety, NRMA Motoring and Services, and the ACT Government.

The local projects are:

  • Tuggeranong Parkway From Hindmarsh Drive to Sulwood Drive, Fisher: Install animal fencing, road side lighting, advance warning signals sign at Sulwood Drive and improved signage, line marking and barriers. $1,150,000
  • Tuggeranong Parkway From Cotter Road to Hindmarsh Drive, Weston: Install animal fencing, upgrade line marking and barriers and correction of minor deficiencies. $748,000
  • Pialligo Avenue Oaks Estate Road, Pialligo: Install traffic signals. $605,000
  • Coulter Drive Ginninderra Drive, Evatt: Upgrade left turn lane to high angle approach and improve road markings for cyclists. $197,000
