QUIRKY is the word that comes to mind in describing the next dinner show at Teatro Vivaldi, as The Lord Byron 5 take the stage to perform poetical works of Byron in what is called “an original and compelling musical and theatrical act.”
Schoolchildren the world over have heard of George Gordon, Lord Byron, the Romantic poet, Balkan revolutionary, rake and rockstar extraordinaire who was reputedly described by one of his many paramours Lady Caroline Lamb as “mad, bad and dangerous to know.”
Of course at school we mostly saw the sweeter side of Byron, but in “Gothic steam punk folk rock” show devised by musician, composer and songwriter Craig Dawson we’ll get the full range, from “Lines addressed to a young lady” to the 1813 Romantic poem “The Giaour – a fragment of a Turkish tale”, about adventures of a female slave who was thrown into the sea for infidelity, and avenged by her young Venetian lover.
“Dark, funny, sexy and energetic”, as they’re saying, the show aims to conjure up and people from Byron’s short but turbulent life.
Curiously The Lord Byron 5 is made up of 6 people: Craig Dawson, Simone Dawson, Nick Powell, Rita Woolhouse, Paul Dugdale and Fred Pilcher.
Their excuse? “This is poetry – not maths.”
