A 28-year-old Tuggeranong man will face the ACT Magistrates Court on cannabis cultivation offences and a second may also face charges after they were arrested by police in the Uriarra Forest, west of Canberra yesterday (Thursday, January 29).

Suspicious of a potential cannabis crop in the area, ACT Policing’s Rural Patrol team had been patrolling in the Uriarra this week when they encountered two men walking out of the forest carrying backpacks. The men were carrying water containers and insecticide but claimed they were out picking blackberries. The men were taken into custody and will face court at a later date.

Police also located two other cannabis plantations in the nearby area.

In total 57 cannabis plants, all close to maturity and ready for harvest, weighing 35kg, together with associated cultivation paraphernalia were removed from the area.

ACT Policing and ACT Parks and Conservation Rangers collaborate and share intelligence on issues and offences such as the use of bush land in the territory for the cultivation of cannabis.
