SHANE Rattenbury has announced the 10 most popular girls’ and boys’ baby names for 2014.
This year, Amelia makes its way to the top of the list of girls’ names while William retains the top spot for the boys’ names. In 2013, Chloe and William were the number one baby names.
“As at 19 December 5,645 births were registered in the ACT in 2014, made up of 2,696 girls and 2,949 boys,” Shane said.
“It is interesting to note that William continues to be a popular name having appeared in the top 10 list many times, including 1950 and each year since 2001.
“In fact, William was the most popular boys name in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2013. It was the second most popular name in 2007, 2010 and 2011 and the third most popular in 2004 and 2012.
“Amelia is a more recent addition to the top 10 list, having appeared for the first time in 2007.
Many of the other girls’ names from the 2014 list have appeared in the top 10 lists over the past 20 years.
“Based on the mother’s usual place of residence at the time of the birth, the top five suburbs for numbers of births in 2014 were Ngunnawal, Kambah, Bonner, Macgregor and Dunlop.
