CANBERRA families continue to pay the highest costs for childcare compared to the rest of the nation, according to a report released today. Childcare1

The Federal Government’s June Quarter 2013 Child Care and Early Learning in Summary report also reveals the number of ACT families using child care increased 9.2 per cent to 15,830 since the June 2012 quarter – the largest percentage increase in the country.

Assistant Education Minister Sussan Ley says childcare costs have “doubled” for Canberra families over the last six years.

“This report hammers home the importance of our decision to task the Productivity Commission to look at ways to deliver more affordable, accessible and flexible child care for all Australians,” Ms Ley says.

“It’s therefore more important than ever ACT families have their say on the future of child care before it’s too late.”

The report showed the total number of children using approved childcare increased by 10 per cent – the second largest percentage increase in the nation behind WA.

ACT parents claimed a total of about $22 million in child care benefits in June 2013 quarter – $3 million extra than the June 2012 quarter.

The report will be available in full at www.education.gov.au
