TWENTY ONE year-old Polish dancer Alicja Kusmierczak is just one of over 300 dancers in “Romeo & Juliet,” the latest production from Tuggeranong Arts Centre’s ‘Fresh Funk’ program.

Back in 2009, Kusmierczak won a dance scholarship through the FNF Dance Studio in Poland and was able to attend the annual Hollywood Tour in Los Angeles, where she met and performed with Canberra’s Fresh Funk team, promising to work with them some day.

Years later she has achieved her dream to come to Australia through a university exchange program.

After moving to London to study tourism and business at the University of Westminster, Kusmierczak found herself one of 50 students who applied for a six-month exchange program between Westminster and The University of Canberra.

“I was one of only two people offered a placement and now, after 6 years, here I am realising my dream to be in Canberra dancing with Fresh Funk”, she says, adding, “I can hardly believe I’m actually here dancing with this awesome bunch of people.” She will return to London in January to finish her degree, but says she’ll be back.

Fresh Funk’s “Romeo & Juliet” is an urban remake of the Shakespeare, done to contemporary popular music and artists such as Beyoncé, Kanye West and Florence and the Machine.

“Romeo & Juliet” at Erindale Theatre, Friday, December 12, 8pm, Saturday, December 13, 5pm and Saturday December 13, 8pm.
