MEMBERS of the public are invited to take part in a Master Plan Community Workshop and have a say on the future development of the Australian National Botanic Gardens this Sunday, December 7.

Draft concepts will be available for viewing in the Visitor Centre from 11 to 3 and presentations will take place in the Garden’s Theatrette between noon and 2pm.

The Gardens have engaged one of Australia’s most experienced master planning teams to develop a 20-year Master Plan that will be a blueprint for future development. The consortium of architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer and landscape architects Taylor Cullity Lethlean are seeking community input at this Sunday’s workshop.

There are plenty of ideas on the table, from a new visitor centre, cafe, pathways and learning experiences for children, but the exact mix will not be known until the planning and consultation process runs its course.

The scope of the Master Plan will also include a new seed bank and facilities to increase the horticultural, research and conservation capabilities of this prominent national institution.

This public consultation period begins with the release of a draft concept plan at the community workshop, and will close on January 23.

If you can’t make it, concepts will also be available on the Garden’s website at www.anbg.gov.au/gardens. To have your say send an email to masterplan@anbg.gov.au, talk to staff on telephone 6250 9450.

A second stage of public consultation will occur in March 2015 and it is anticipated that the final Master Plan will be developed by June 2015.

Master Plan Community Workshop, at Australian National Botanic Gardens Clunies Ross Street, Acton Visitor Centre and Theatrette, 11am to 3pm Sunday, December 7, all welcome.
