THE Liberals’ Giulia Jones has taken the opportunity of White Ribbon Day to call on the ACT government to raise the profile of domestic violence by reporting statistics annually on the issue.

“Domestic violence and harassment is a major issue and the government should seize the opportunity to have meaningful statistics to track incidents of domestic violence in the ACT and report to the Legislative Assembly every year, coinciding with White Ribbon Day,” Giulia said.

“White Ribbon Day plays a valuable role in the community. It’s important to remember women who suffer from domestic violence are in our workplaces and shopping centres every single day. To see improvement s we have to actually know our actions are having an effect, because there is still a long way to go:

  • One woman is killed on average every week as a result of intimate partner violence.
  • Intimate partner violence is the leading contributor to death, disability and ill health in Australian women aged 15-44.
  • One in four children are exposed to domestic violence.
  • One in three women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence. perpetrated by someone known to them.
  • One in five women experience harassment in the workplace.

“Reporting of statistics will not only raise awareness but also show if the situation is improving. This should complement the social change already underway as a result of the work done through White Ribbon Day. I encourage the ACT government to strongly consider this call,” Mrs Jones concluded.
