Design showcases and other arts this weekend

TONIGHT Thursday 20 November, 5 Lonsdale St Braddon will be transformed from a vacant shop front to a pop up gallery space.

As part of the ‘DESIGN Canberra’ festival, local timber recycler and furniture maker Thor’s Hammer, has brought together a collaborative exhibition featuring works designed and built at the Old Canberra Brickworks. The show features works and collaborations by Thor Diesendorf, Enrico Taglietti, Geoff Farquhar-Still and Peter Vandermark. Opens Thursday 20 November at 6pm (All welcome) and again on Friday 11 – 7pm – Saturday & Sunday 11 – 4pm. meet the designers and craftsmen – Fri 21 November 4-6.30pm – Sat 22 & Sun 23 November 10.30-1pm.


YOU can see Canberra in a whole new light as DESIGN Canberra’s ‘Capital of Culture’ Tours take participants on short tours with designers and architects for a close up of landscape and architectural landmarks, design projects and the best of Canberra’s coffee stops. A Highlight will be a look at City West and the NewActon Precinct with the Australian Institute of landscape Architects. Until Sunday 23 November. AARWUN Gallery’s annual fine art auction takes place this Sunday November 23 at its Gold Creek, Federation Square, with doors opening at 9am and the auction commences at 10.30am. The catalogue is viewable at aarwungallery.com and artists whose work is on sale range from Ben Quilty to John Olsen.

UNTIL Nov 28, gallery@bcs is showing ‘Beauty & the Beast,’ a mixed media exhibition by Caren Wilford & Antigone Byron, Belconnen Community Centre, Swanson Crt Belconnen, Mon-Fri 9am-4:30pm. Both Artists work closely with Karyn Fearnside, a practicing artist and support worker, though they have not worked together. Byron finds her inspiration through her poodle Zeva. Wilford is inspired by the sea, flowers and children’s literature.


TOMORROW, Friday, 21 November at 6pm in the Canberra Theatre, Michelle Heine, together with the teachers and students of “Legs” Dance Studio, present “Movies, Musicals and Legends!” It’s their 25th Birthday Dance Extravaganza and is billed as celebration of delightful dance, gorgeous costumes and singing with dance routines from Legally Blonde, Mary Poppins, Gatsby, Bond, Madonna, Queen and Michael Jackson and more. Tickets at the door.


QL2 Dance is presenting new short works in “Hot to Trot”, created by local Canberra contemporary dance choreographers – now in its 16th year. Director Ruth Osborne says “these young people have ideas, they have a voice, and they’re not be afraid to share.” At QL2 Theatre at Gorman House Arts Centre 7pm 22 & 23 November. DEAD from Central Victoria will be heading up to play a show at The Basement (back bar) 2 Cohen St Belconnen, this Friday Nov 21, alongside locals Looking Glass, and Bruce! from Wollongong. DEAD are touring the country in support of their third LP, ‘Captains of Industry.’ Tickets at the door.


NORTHERN Sydney trio Little May will be at The Front in Lyneham this Saturday Nov 22. Earlier this month they played in London, in New York City and Los Angeles. With special guests Winterbourne, bookings to oztix.com.au or at the door.


LIMESTONE Consort will perform Mendelssohn’s Concerto for violin, piano and strings this Sunday 23 November at 3pm in All Saints’ Anglican Church, Ainslie. Pianist and director of the Riverina Conservatorium of Music Hamish Tait is joined by Limestone’s director, violinist Lauren Davis for the concerto. Also on the program is Percy Fletcher’s lively ‘Folk Tune and Fiddle Dance’, and Purcell’s ‘Abdelazer Suite’. Tickets: $15/10 at the door


“THIS American Life” Concert will see CORO Chamber Choir with Calvin Bowman (conductor) performing a selection of “thought-provoking” early 20th Century American repertoire by Samuel Barber, Aaron Copland and Elliott Carter. TONIGHT’S the night. The Marsden Art Group exhibition “Steampunk” will be opened tonight Thursday 20th November at 6.00pm at Watson Arts Centre in Aspinall St, with Barak Zelig and Stephen Harrison as guest artists.


THIS Saturday evening in the Crawford Street Lifestyle Precinct, athletes will come together with the Queanbeyan community to celebrate Christmas and the Telstra Queanbeyan Gift. Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall will light the new giant Christmas tree at about 8pm and from 6pm to 11pm there will be entertainment, including fire eaters, musicians, food and of other fun.


DESIGN Canberra has taken over the city with an exciting program of pop-up shops, exhibitions and projects located in vacant shopfronts in Centrepoint, Bailey’s Corner (in Civic), Braddon and Kingston. DESIGN Canberra ACTivates are located in Civic at the Centrepoint Building, City Walk; Baileys Corner, London Circuit; and the old JB Hifi building on East Row. MEANTIME also as part of DESIGN Canberra, the high end design market, ‘Modern market’ is set to fill NewActon’s Nishi building with top local and interstate designers. Held on Level 8 of the award-winning Nishi building on Saturday 22 November from 2-8pm, MODERN market offers stunning views over Canberra.

IT’S all go at Wesley Music Centre in National Cct Forrest this weekend, with a recital by Marcela Fiorillo’s piano students this Friday 21 November 6.30pm, FREE. ‘SHARING Light,’ curated by F!NK + CO, part of the Design Festival, is on show until 24 November (12 – 7pm daily) in Shop 32a Baileys Corner, Cnr London Circuit and East Row, Canberra, (Next to Tosolini’s).


THE annual Christmas Celebration Market is at Belconnen Arts Centre, 118 Emu Bank, Belconnen this Sunday 23 November from 1:00–6:00pm. Stall holders and artists from the region present their environmental, sustainable and unique artworks and products.

‘SHAPES in Space’ is also now up at Belconnen Arts Centre until Dec 7. A collaborative group of 16 visual artists who identify as having a disability have investigated colour, shape and pattern with tutor Nicola Lambert, exploring how these elements, combined and separated, can portray emotions and evoke responses with themselves and the viewer.


REG Mombassa and Peter O’Doherty and their band Dog Trumpet are at The RUC at Turner (formerly Turner Bowling club) at 8pm this Friday Nov 21 to play songs from their double album Medicated Spirits, which features the songs ‘What Falls Away’, ‘Speed of Light’, ‘With Good Reason’ and ‘Made in the World’. Tickets at the door.
