Moochers at Glebe Park and weekend arts around Canberra

CANBERRA band Moochers Inc. is launching its debut EP at a free event in Glebe Park this Saturday, 15 November, 2pm, performing with Pocket Fox and the Hoary Sunrays.

Moochers Inc. has been performing its brand of 1920’s New Orleans-inspired jazz over the past three years. Local songwriters Cameron Smith (trumpet) and Rafe Morris (guitar), say that a party in the park is the perfect venue for the launch.

VIOLINIST Anna McMichael, accompanied by Canberra International Music Festival’s Artistic Director Roland Peelman, will perform music by Debussy, Ravel, Sibelius, Szymanovsky and Kate Moore in a fundraiser for the 2015 festival. Noon, this Saturday 15 November at 154 Hazeldell Road Mulloon, between Bungendore and Braidwood. Directions: 18km from Bungendore along the Kings Highway towards Braidwood. Turn left onto Hazeldell Road (watch for letter boxes) Look for the “Palerang” sign on the right. Bring: A comfy chair and be prepared for an elegant outdoor picnic. IN Musica da Camera’s third program for 2014, the harpsichord, an instrument usually associated with early music, will feature in two 20th Century works: Harpsichord Concerto by Henryk Górecki and The Phoenix and the Turtle by Australian composer, Colin Brumby. Other works include an arrangement for flute of a Bach harpsichord concerto and a Sinfonietta by Roussel. The orchestra will be directed by Michael Sollis and the soloists will be James Huntingford (harpsichord) and Kiri Sollis (flute). This Saturday November 15 at 2.30 pm at Holy Covenant Anglican Church, 89 Dexter Street, Cook ACT, and on Sunday November 16 at 2.30 pm in St Peter & Paul’s Cathedral, Goulburn. Tickets at the door.


THE “Unbridled Festival of Horses, Music and Food” opens at Thoroughbred Park this Saturday, 15 November as a celebration of the horse, with music, entertainment and a craft market. SOPRANO Greta Bradman will join the Australian String Quartet tour to present Paul Stanhope’s “Sea Chronicles”, a song cycle for soprano and string quartet. The concert commences with Fanny Mendelssohn’s rarely heard String Quartet in E‐flat major and concludes with Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in A minor op 13. ‘LET all Men Sing!’ Canberra is to host the biennial massed male voice concert of the Male Choirs Association of Australia (MCAA) – ‘Let All Men Sing!’ This special concert will be staged at the AIS Arena this Saturday 15th November at 2.30 pm. In a city spoilt for high quality music, it will be a rare choral treat, with over 400 choristers from fourteen male choirs, including one from Wellington, New Zealand. “EDGELANDS” is a photographic exhibition by Gary Sauer-Thompson opening at 4pm this Sunday 16 November, Manning Clark House, 11 Tasmania Circle Forrest. This exhibition looks back to the 1970’s New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape exhibition (1975) and movement in the US. Sauer-Thompson has been an economist, a tramways conductor, unemployed, an author, a political advisor and a blogger.


THE Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House has a new exhibition, “Bespoke: Design for the People,” launching tomorrow Friday 14 November as part of DESIGN Canberra. Six Australian craft and design practitioners have created new works that reflect and respond to the designs of the original furniture at Old Parliament House. The Canberra artists are Jennifer Robertson, Niklavs Rubenis, Julie Ryder, Caren Florance in collaboration with Melinda Smith; and Sydney artist Cecelia Heffer. The exhibition will run from 15 November for 12 months.

THE Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House has just launched “The Power of 1: Does your voice count?” exhibition, which displays the results of a national baseline survey canvassing four generations: Builders, Boomers, GenX and GenY. It presents Australian views and attitudes towards democracy and the political system, exploring what we like, don’t like and think should be changed.
