Fans of  “The Sound of Music” won’t be disappointed by this production. With its live orchestra and huge cast of accomplished singers it’s a lavish, musical treat.

Some of the acting is a bit wooden and more imaginative choreography could have added energy to the early scenes, but as the show progresses it gains momentum and the music always enthrals.

Veronica Thwaites-Brown gave a note-perfect performance in the formidable role of Maria. She shone brightest in her scenes with the Von Trapp children, where a playful energy brought the songs to life.

Another bright light was Olivia Raymond as Leisl Von Trapp with a delightful presence and silvery voice. The romance between her and Lachlan McGinness as Rolf, the telegram boy, was well played. The youngest Von Trapp was Sarah Forster as Gretl who was natural, energetic and obviously happy to be there.

The choral work of the nuns of the abbey was outstanding and the rendition of the classic “Climb Every Mountain” by Judith Colquhourn, as Mother Abbess, was stirring and impressive.

The beautiful, handmade costumes were another highlight. There were multiple costume changes for the large cast and no effort seemed to have been spared in this area.

This is a long show, running for three hours including interval, but the talent, effort and skill of the cast and production team make it well worth the time.
