ANDREW Barr has announced he’s legislating to abolish the showground board.
“Legislation introduced in the Legislative Assembly today will pave the way for the integration of Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) with the management of other Territory venues,” Andrew said.
The Exhibition Park Corporation Repeal Bill 2014 will repeal the Exhibition Park Corporation Act 1976 and allow for the integration of the functions, staff, assets and liabilities of the Exhibition Park Corporation into the Territory Venues and Events area of the Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate (CMTEDD).
“Bringing our Territory venues together provides an opportunity to share expertise, particularly in relation to event planning, sales and marketing, security, insurance and other management issues.
“There will also be efficiencies across the venues through streamlining of supplies and services, contracts and shared use of equipment and resources.
“Importantly, the Bill will not affect the community events and activities that we all enjoy at EPIC. It will be business as usual.
“There will be no change to events like the Canberra Show, Summernats, the Folk Festival or the weekly Farmers’ Markets as a result of these changes.
“EPIC will continue to provide in-kind support for community events (which amounted to almost $700,000 in 2013-14) that included the Lifeline Bookfairs, the National Folk Festival, and the Royal Canberra Show.
“EPIC staff are already public servants and that will continue. The repeal will, however, result in the EPC Board being abolished. The Board is supportive of the change.”
