CANBERRA writer Paul Bissett has won third prize in the Page International Screenwriting Awards for his TV comedy script “Above the Angelic”.
The Page Awards, which accepted more than 6,000 entries this year across a variety of categories, are based in Los Angeles, and aim to bridge the gap between emerging writers and producers looking for scripts.
The awards has helped forge the careers of many writers now enjoying success in Hollywood and around the world.
Bissett’s prize-winning script is the first episode in a multi-episode series about an unfulfilled plant-waterer and “friendly stalker” who inherits an enormous debt and a dubious detective agency.
“The main character is a bit of a loser but eternally optimistic,” Bissett says, “When he inherits his dad’s shady detective agency he sees a chance to finally make something of himself and immediately goes in search of the cheapest trench-coat he can find.”
He wrote script while trying to juggle work for his copywriting business wordED and raising a young family.
Ironically, he says, he only entered the competition to take advantage of the judge’s feedback service.
“Not a bad result for someone looking for a bit of feedback,” he says.
