SHANE Rattenbury has joined the local Curtin community in celebrating the 50th birthday of the suburb.

“Half as old as Canberra itself, the suburb of Curtin welcomed its first resident in 1964 and has developed into a fantastic local community,” Shane said.

“Today’s party at Curtin shops was a celebration of the suburb’s history and community spirit. The Curtin Friends Group needs to be acknowledged for their work in preparing the shops for the occasion and their commitment to improving their neighbourhood shopping centre.

“Today’s celebrations focused on sharing stories and recording the local history of Curtin. Historical photographs and memorabilia were displayed in shops and long standing members of the community reminisced over the changes Curtin has seen, as Canberra grew into the vibrant city it is today.

“Birthday celebrations included live music throughout the afternoon and into the evening involving children from local schools, local musicians and singing groups. The event was commemorated with a souvenir tea towel, put together by local designers Gatbi, and featuring a list of all the streets in Curtin and set against an iconic Canberra sky-line.

“It is fantastic to see the pride Curtin residents have for their local shops and their willingness to celebrate the people and businesses of their community,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.
