IN a sentence published today Chief Justice Murrell ponders what to do with Matthew Millard.
The 31 year old with what the Judge describes as “a very complex sentencing picture”, with an intellectual disability and compounding brain damage from drug overdose, was arrested in December 2013 for a botched Curtin burglary in which he tried to give police a false name but came undone when they read his name tattooed on his arm.
Given bail to attend his mother’s funeral he failed to return to the prison as the court describes:
Regrettably he did not return to the Alexander Maconochie Centre at the required time, nor did he remain in the custody of the person who was responsible for supervising him at the funeral. Rather, the offender sought to obtain crisis support payments from Centrelink. On 28 April 2014, police were called to the Centrelink shopfront in Belconnen. The offender showed the police a document, a copy of which is in Exhibit A. The document purported to come from the Supreme Court (spelt “Supream Court”), and stated that the offender was on bail for the purpose of travelling to “Auscare in Cairns buy (sic) 29 April”.
His non-parole period runs until 5 September 2016 and hopefully some special secure care is available for him after that time.
