SIMON Plummer has been elected as the 12th President of the Canberra Southern Cross Club, with the incumbent president John Lewis moving over to be Vice President.
Mr Plummer has had a long association with the Southern Cross Club, starting work as a trainee manager in 1989. He also worked in administration, marketing and at the family restaurant, Henry’s. He left in 1995, however returned three years later as the general manager, where he stayed for a further 18 months.
Mr Plummer now owns two cafes, Plunge Café and Florist in Bruce and Remedy Belconnen in Belconnen. He has also served 13 years on the Club’s board of directors.
“I’m involved because I love it and with the history I have with the Club, it really is in my veins,” he said.
“We’ll be doing a lot more research, so we can align our products and services with what our members need and want.
Established in 1972 the iconic Club now has about 83,000 members and employs over 500 staff across four hospitality venues, five gyms, two basketball stadiums and a ferry on Lake Burley Griffin.
In the 2014-15 financial year the Club will donate almost $1.5 million to 350 sporting, social and community groups.
John Lewis is the retiring president after three years in the role, but remains on the Board as Vice President. John’s father Barney was also a past President of the Club.
He said highlights included the redevelopment of the Yacht Club as a Canberra landmark and the extensive process used to find and appoint Ian Mackay as the new Chief Executive Officer.
“I’m proud we were able to steer the organisation through what is usually a traumatic process,” Mr Lewis said.
