PETRIE Plaza in Civic has been rendered impassable as SIDS and Kids ACT gears up for their world record attempt at the most gargantuan Christmas lights display known to man.
Construction will commence tomorrow.
Once complete, the display will consist of two tunnels either side of the infamous carousel in Petrie Plaza. Tunnel one will begin at Bailey’s Arcade and end at the Canberra Labor Club, while tunnel two will begin at the David Jones corner of the Canberra Centre and finish just before the Fish Shack.
Perimeter fencing has been erected today to cordon off the worksite, which will remain a construction zone over the next five weeks.
Shops in Petrie Plaza remain accessible to foot traffic however public spaces and seating may be disrupted for short periods. At this stage there are no planned road closures.
“With more than a million lights on show, visitors will be part of a magical Christmas experience and witness the most spectacular show of lights the world has ever seen,” a spokesperson said.
The display will be on from Friday 28 November to New Year’s Eve 2014. Entry will be by gold coin donation. For more information call (02) 6287 4255 or visit www.inthecitycanberra.com.au.
