“CITYNEWS” was impressed by the scale of works on Northbourne Avenue where the march of cyclone fencing has made another major advance.
A query to TAMS earned us an explanation.
“Roads ACT are replacing street lights and cabling in the median strip on Northbourne Avenue between Barry Drive and Alinga Street. Nineteen new lights will be installed and work is expected to be complete by the end of this month,” a spokesperson said.
We wondered if this was anything to do with the light rail station planned for this site in two years time.
“No, the street light project is not affiliated with light rail,” the spokesperson said.
So we asked if the whole lot was going to have to be torn up when the light rail station goes in (construction scheduled to start in 2016 mind you).
It has been a few hours now with no response.
UPDATE:
Word has now reached us:
The design for the first stage of light rail has not been finalised. The new street lights that are being installed are base plate mounted which means they can be removed easily if required.
