Major faith groups united with leaders of the Muslim community yesterday at Parliament House.

Leaders of the Muslim community of Canberra have been meeting regularly for over a month assessing the implications of the new anti-terror legislation and the subsequent divisive language used by politicians and certain segments of the media that has fuelled terrible hatred towards the Muslim community, particularly Muslim women.

“The purpose of meeting in front of Parliament House is a reminder that the building is the seat of our democracy and that those who have the privilege of being elected to or work there have a very important duty to represent the welfare of all Australians”, said the Chair of the Canberra Multicultural Community Forum Diana Abdel-Rahman.

“The singling out of who from the Muslim community could visit the house was a dark day.”

“The discussions that were had in Parliament House last week and the near implementation of an apartheid style segregation sets a dangerous precedent, which should never have been contemplated let alone discussed”, said Mohammed Ali, Vice-President of Forum Australia.
