Shoe gazers and other arts in Canberra this weekend

His periscopes or “shoe gazers” painted in primary colours attached to the wall actually work to show your feet. “Modulations,” opening 6pm Friday October 10, all welcome, and continuing until Saturday November 15, at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Gorman House, Tuesday to Friday 11am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm.

ARCHIE Moore has made 14 colourful flags for each of the 14 Aboriginal nations. These flags are inspired by the work of anthropologist RH Mathews who in 1900 identified 14 different Indigenous language groups in Queensland. “14 QLD Nations,” Also opening 6pm Friday October 10, all welcome, and continuing until Saturday November 15, at Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Gorman House, Tuesday to Friday 11am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 4pm.


PLAYING Field Studio at 2 Kingsley Street, Canberra is inviting the public to see what its residency artists have achieved during their time in the studio, 3:30 pm – 4:30 pm this Sunday, Oct 12. Julie Ryder (Visual Artist) will discuss how her work benefited from the residency. FREE event.

STEPHEN Trebilcock is a self-taught ‘new master’ who has perfected his own impasto technique and style and later spent a year studying at the Slade School of Art in London. His two passions, his art and his garden, come together in his striking oil paintings. Trebilcock was the winner of the Painting Category of the 2009 Waterhouse Prize. His work is on show at Paintbox Fine Art, 32 Lonsdale St, and Braddon until Nov 2, 11am-5pm Wednesday-Sunday.


THE inaugural Queanbeyan River Festival will be held on the banks of the Queanbeyan River noon to 7pm this Saturday. Winner in the new Clearwater Sculpture Prize on the riverbank will be announced at noon. There’ll also be lantern making workshops, stage shows and live music. All welcome.

SELF-DESCRIBED “Hendra boy” and a cult hit at the Gympie Muster, Glenn Cardier, has written songs for Olivia Newton-John and played support for Midnight Oil and Spike Milligan. He’ll be at the Harmonie German Club at 8pm this Saturday, October 11.


Throwing hands

CANBERRA Potters’ Society opens its doors at Watson Arts Centre, Aspinall Street, Watson, this Sunday 12 October from 10am – 2pm for its 2014 Open Day. Highlights include demonstrations of hand-building and throwing on the potter’s wheel, the 2014 Members’ Exhibition in the gallery and the popular ‘buy a soup bowl, get the soup for free’. There’ll be children’s clay activities and Raku firing demonstrations throughout the day.

MELBOURNE indie-rock threesome Woodlock will be at Smith’s Alternative this Sunday 12 October celebrating the release of their new single ‘The Garden’, from their recently released EP “Labour of Love”, which debuted in the overall ARIA charts top 100 and also in the ARIA top 50 digital downloads chart.

Predominantly using glass as her medium, she challenges the normal understanding of glass being reflective and transparent by making translucent works that are potently charged with her sense of humanity and justice. Currently represented in The Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize exhibition, she is now exhibiting at Karen O’Clery’s Narek Galleries in the Old Tanja Church 1140 Tathra-Bermagui Rd Tanja 10.30-5.30 Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday until Nov 17.
