ROADS ACT says work is now complete on the $2 million upgrade to Smiths Road Bridge over the Gudgenby River.
Smiths Road Bridge crosses the Gudgenby River approximately three kilometres south of Tharwa.
“The original bridge was a low level single lane three span bridge, supported by reinforced concrete blade piers and abutments,” Director of Roads ACT, Tony Gill, said.
“Heavy rains in the catchment resulted in flooding in December 2010. Due to these heavy rains debris built up on the southern side of the bridge and subsequently washed away one pier and two adjacent spans.
“These recent works have seen the bridge replaced with a new bridge adjacent to the old one. The new bridge is a single span which will avoid the impact of debris in future flood events.
“This completed project will be welcomed by residents of Tharwa, southern ACT and NSW.
“The project was undertaken by local contractor Hawkins Civil, with design and site superintendent works by SMEC Australia Pty Ltd.
“Landscaping is being done at the site and the removal of the temporary bridge will be completed in the coming months. I would like to thanks motorists for the patience during the construction period.”
