SINGER-songwriter Lucy Wise and her trio will be at Smith’s tonight.
Wise has entertained audiences across Australia, New Zealand and the UK with her unique blend of folk, chamber and pop music combined with masterful storytelling and a soulful voice. Drawing inspiration from her background in Appalachian and Celtic folk music as well as legendary songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, Lucy’s songs sketch universally recognisable stories that are grounded in the realities of everyday experience. Her band is Chris Stone (violin) and Holly Downes (double bass) of New-Acoustic instrumental trio, The String Contingent.
Joining them will be Ari & Mia, Boston’s Americana sister act, who use the traditions of Southern and North-eastern fiddle music and the early American songbook to create a realm where their own compositions cross paths with older traditions. Their music honours the sounds of Appalachian cottages, rural dance floors, and urban concert halls, combing it with an innovative approach to song and tune-writing.
Lucy Wise Trio with Ari & Mia, 8pm tonight, Tuesday September 16 at Smiths Alternative Bookshop, 76 Alinga St, tickets at the door.
