Mysterious graffiti strikes the ACT Memorial

THE ACT Memorial on Ainslie Avenue appears to have fallen victim to a very neat series of stencil graffiti.

Emailing the image to our Tokyo Bureau elicited this curious response to the question of what it means:

It’s read in Japanese as Kure or Go. Used at the start of Gofukuya which is the traditional word for a kimono shop. Or an island name near Hiroshima (Kure)

Wu – in Chinese, a last name or commonly used as a place name. Commonly comes up in the three kingdoms stories. Then there is a famous dude, after the three kingdoms period who betrayed the Han (and thus the emperor) who had it as his last name. Quite a few in the Ching dynasty anyway.

Asked why that character might occur in this setting all we got back was:

Mindless vandalism by someone who thinks Kanji are cool???

Any theories are welcome in the comments.
