JEREMY Hanson is calling for a Board of Inquiry into the Mr Fluffy fiasco after work on a long term solution is complete.
“The Mr Fluffy issue is a tragic saga that has affected thousands of lives across Canberra. The first priority is to provide a permanent solution and the Canberra Liberals remain 100 percent committed to supporting a bi-partisan solution. However, revelations in today’s media, along with the many heart wrenching personal stories that have come to light, means that a full, independent Board of Inquiry must examine the affair,” Jeremy said.
“A solution for Mr Fluffy homeowners is the most important issue at this stage and it needs to be resolved first. However, serious questions have to be asked about potentially significant failings in dealing with the asbestos crisis.
“Therefore, at such time a decision is finalised on the permanent solution for affected Mr Fluffy homeowners, I will be calling for a full Board of Inquiry into the matter under the Inquiries Act 1991.
“This is the ACT’s version of a Royal Commission and a matter as serious as this requires serious investigation.
“Many lives have been tragically affected and those people deserve answers as to how and why they were exposed to this risk. There are also potentially hundreds of millions of dollars the taxpayers’ will have to pay and that too deserves investigation.
“I must make it clear I am not accusing or laying blame on any person or any side of politics, but the community deserves answers. If I were in government, I would be investigating this matter to the utmost and I would be as open and accountable as possible.
“The only way the community can get the answers it deserves is to hold this Board of Inquiry and I call on the government to do so once a permanent solution to the problem is determined,” Mr Hanson concluded.
