“21 Reasons” is a multimedia exhibition in celebration of I-Day by Belconnen Community Service and Woden Community Service, and it’s just one of the innovative programs on show at Belconnen Community Centre this week.
In the exhibition, Canberra artists and play-makers celebrate the 21st anniversary of International Day of People with Disability.
Throughout the year with they support of Belconnen and Woden Community Services, the artists they have been busy making “perfect paintings, marvellous masks, colourful costumes and berserk ball drawings”.
It follows the launch yesterday in theatre@bcs of “REBUS”, a new mixed ability ensemble creating theatre that aims to make Canberra more inclusive of people with disability.
Its first show, “A Day in the Life,” directed by Robin Davidson, was performed at the launch, who explains that the actors “perform the piece twice and the audience are invited to call ‘stop!’, come onto the stage and replace one of the actors to try and achieve a better outcome.”
REBUS was established by Nican, a disability information and referral service, with funding from an ACT Innovations Grant ands producer Jim McGrath says, “No one has ever used this style of theatre and involved people with and without disability in Canberra to raise awareness of accessibility and inclusion. It is an appropriate way to demonstrate inclusion on the International Day of People with Disability”.
