Simon rolls out the environment grants

SIMON Corbell has announced which community groups working to protect Canberra’s natural environment have been winners under the ACT Environment Grants.

“These grants will support projects to revegetate the Murrumbidgee River corridor, engage youth and indigenous people to take practical action on restoring native habitat, and manage threats to biodiversity across Black Mountain, Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura amongst many others,” Simon said.

Groups successful in receiving funding include:

  • Southern ACT Catchment Group — $8,569 to revegetate a degraded section of the Murrumbidgee River at Castle Hill
  • Scouts Australia ACT Branch — $7,807 to engage young people in the removal of woody weeds in Canberra Nature Park
  • Molonglo Catchment Group — $40,267 to manage threats to biodiversity across Black Mountain, Mount Ainslie and Mount Majura
  • Southern ACT Catchment Group / ACT Wildlife — $11,980 to provide housing for injured, sick and orphaned native animals
  • Greening Australia Capital Region — $28,927 to continue post-bushfire landscape restoration activities in the Lower Cotter Catchment
  • Cotter Road Landcare Group — $37,000 to remove a dense section of blackberries along the Murrumbidgee River corridor that is reinfesting adjacent land
  • Molonglo Catchment Group — $6,508 to support indigenous people to replant an area of land with locally native species to enhance woodland condition and improve riparian habitat
  • Canberra Ornithologists Group (COG) Inc — $6,035 to complete the next phase of the gang-gang cockatoo citizen science survey
  • Ginninderra Catchment Group — $18,270 to build an online portal for Frogwatch volunteers to capture survey data, and support ongoing community based monitoring and habitat management
  • Southern ACT Catchment Group — $15,172 to recreate a chain-of-ponds to enhance riparian habitat on tributaries of Spring Creek
