An 18-year-old man has lost his provisional licence after police caught him travelling 68km/h over the posted speed limit yesterday afternoon (Thursday, August 7).
About 2.28pm ACT Policing members in an unmarked police car detected the man travelling northbound on the Tuggeranong Parkway at 168 km/h, which is a 100km/h sign posted speed zone.
Police stopped the driver and issued a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by greater than 45km/h which attracts a fine of $1,811 and six demerit points.
As the driver is a provisional licence holder, he received an automatic suspension of his licence for a period of three months.
Acting Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Sergeant Craig McPherson said this is an example of blatant disregard for the speed limit.
“It is disappointing to see that our message to the Canberra community to Stop pushing the limits, is still not getting through. Our members will continue to be out in force to catch those drivers who just aren’t getting the message,” Sergeant McPherson said.
The ‘Stop pushing the limits’ campaign is a joint initiative between ACT Policing and the Justice and Community Safety Directorate and forms part of the ACT’s multi-agency road safety strategy. The campaign aims to encourage attitudinal and behavioural change towards speeding and will continue throughout August 2014.
