MICK Gentleman says amendments to the Holidays Act 1958 have passed the Legislative Assembly, recognising the Territory’s ever increasing ‘Seven day’ workforce and intended to ensure that workers receive fair compensation for working on significant days during the festive season.

The amendments are intended to guarantee that if New Years Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day fall on a Saturday or a Sunday, workers are not forced to forgo spending the day with their family.

“This bill gives a fair go to workers from a range of occupations, from nursing staff to restaurant and retail workers,” Mick said.

“In addition, proper financial compensation will now be given to workers who do make the sacrifice to work on these significant days.

The amendments will restore public holiday parity for ACT and NSW businesses and workers during the Christmas period.

The changes made to the Holidays Act 1958 provide that January 1 and December 25 & 26 will all be official public holidays. In addition, when New Years Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a weekend, there are additional public holidays the following Monday or Tuesday, as appropriate.
