A ridge of high pressure lies across northern New South Wales, while a series of cold fronts from the Southern Ocean are moving across southeast Australia. This pattern is generating gusty winds over southern and central parts of the state today, which are expected to ease slightly during Wednesday before reintensifying on Thursday.

Alpine peaks in the Snowy Mountain forecast district may experience winds averaging around 80 km/h today and early Wednesday, with peak gusts to 100 km/h.

Remaining parts of the Snowy Mountains district, plus higher parts of the Illawarra, Southern Tablelands and ACT forecast districts, may experience damaging wind gusts to 90 km/h this afternoon and evening.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

  • Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
  • Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
  • Keep clear of fallen power lines.
  • For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next warning will be issued by 5:00 pm EST Tuesday.
