THE fire earlier in the year at O’Connor’s Polish Club was an unmitigated tragedy for Canberra’s live music scene and no doubt the Polish community. The historic building had been originally opened by Karol Józef Wojtyła who of course would go on be known as Pope John Paul the Second.

While the club remains out of commission some small good appears to have come from the fire as this message from the Canberra Musicians’ Club explains:

Recent communications with Polish Club representatives have given the unfortunate impression that, while reconstruction will be commencing soon, the Club will likely be out of action for the remainder of the year, aiming for a grand re-opening in Jan/Feb 2015. For building work to commence, a whole lot of tidying up must occur, part of which involves removing a large quantity of beer from the cool room. Keen to at least recover the cost of purchase, the Polish Club committee have decided to sell the beer at near cost price. This Saturday from 11am-2pm, during the usual Polish smallgoods sale (which still takes place each fortnight), beer lovers are invited to the Club to stock up on some delicious Polish beer at ridiculous prices. Really keen people can instead turn up at 1pm on Friday to help move all the beer into the hall and thus get first choice.

Just make sure you enjoy them responsibly.
