“CITYNEWS” has come into possession of Jane Halton’s farewell email to the Department of Health as she moves over to Finance.

Dear colleagues

I am writing to let you know that I have today been advised that the Prime Minister has decided to appoint me to the role of Secretary of the Department of Finance, for a five year term, starting next Wednesday. My current term as Secretary of this department concludes next Tuesday.

While after twelve and a half years as Secretary of this department a move is not unexpected, you can be assured that I will be leaving the department with regret and many fond memories. Leading the Department of Health has been a huge privilege and with the support of so many talented and dedicated staff, we have achieved many ambitious goals designed to lift the health status of the Australian community. This we can all be proud of.

I am, of course, looking forward to the challenge of leading the Finance portfolio but before I leave, I would like to take the opportunity to personally thank each of you for your valuable contribution to the work of the Department of Health. I would also like to take the time to reflect on my time as Secretary and the highlights and achievements that this department has deservedly been recognised for, both nationally and internationally. I will write to you again in the next few days in this regard.

I understand that an announcement regarding the appointment of a Secretary to this department will be made in due course. I will let you know when it is announced.

Jane Halton
Secretary

UPDATE: The Prime Minister has announced the moves as well.

“The Governor-General today approved the reappointment of Mr Mike Mrdak as Secretary to the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development for a period of three years and the appointment of Ms Jane Halton PSM as Secretary of the Department of Finance for a period of five years,” Tony Abbott said.
