BELCONNEN’S former ‘red bridge’, which was removed during renovations at the mall, has been installed where a walking path collapsed beside the Molonglo River, as promised.
The slightly iconic bridge is no longer red but instead sports a more sombre grey for its new job in the public service, and is now open to the public in its new location.
Territory and Municipal Services Minister Shane Rattenbury officially declared the new Molonglo Reach pedestrian bridge open today, having announced earlier this year that it would be used to span a large gap where the pathway had washed away in March 2012.
“Some additional minor works will be completed in the New Year including landscaping and the installation of lighting on the bridge to enhance safety for users, particularly in the winter months when it gets dark earlier,” Mr Rattenbury said.
The Minister said work to install the “former Belconnen icon” had been carefully planned to ensure recreational use of the lake and river was not impeded and habitat, including a number of platypus burrows, was not disturbed.
“With the warm weather and holiday period upon us, I encourage Canberrans to leave the car at home, jump on a bike and go for a ride, and if travelling around Lake Burley Griffin, make use of the new Molonglo Reach bridge,” he added.
