IF you saw the “Carlotta” documentary the other night on TV, you’ll know that there are several theories around as to why Australian men love drag so much.
Australia’s most famous playwright David Williamson, up-to-date as usual, looks behind the scenes to bring us the character of Brent, star AFL footballer, who’s been caught wearing women’s clothes.
As usual, the laughs come thick and fast in a play so full of banter and colourful characters that The Q is saying, “Not suitable for children.”
Described as both “a fast-paced piece of bona-fide classic farce “and “a sweet and clever morality tale with tolerance at its heart,” the play runs in Queanbeyan until Saturday.
Williamson makes the point that Brent is not gay, just a cross-dresser, but it also allows him a swipe at the world of football as business entertainment, a far cry from the world of his early play, “The Club.”
Expect a happy ending. Brent’s teammates, on learning of his after-hours pastime, continue to welcome him with open arms.
Sigh, if only it were so in real life.
“Managing Carmen” at The Q, June 24-28, bookings to theq.net.au or 6285 6290. The play contains strong language and adult themes.
