Corbell announces 11 appointments to the Law Reform Advisory Council

Simon Corbell has announced the appointment of 11 members to the ACT Law Reform Advisory Council.

“Members are appointed on the basis of their expertise in matters relating to law and legal policy,” Simon said.

“They are experts in a wide variety of law related fields, from the judiciary and legal profession, to police, community and consumer agencies, and victims support groups.”

The Council is chaired by Professor Simon Rice, Director of Law Reform and Social Justice at the ANU College of Law and includes six members who represent nominated ACT agencies and five members appointed in an individual capacity.

The six members representing the nominated ACT agencies are:

  • Chief Police Officer Rudi Lammers
  • Justice John Burns (ACT Supreme Court)
  • Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker (ACT Magistrates Court)
  • Dr Helen Watchirs (ACT Human Rights Commission)
  • Mr Martin Hockridge (ACT Law Society)
  • Mr Stuart Pilkinton SC (ACT Bar Association)

The five members appointed in a personal capacity are:

  • Ms Heidi Yates
  • Mr David Heckendorf
  • Ms Louise Taylor
  • Mr John Kalokerinos
  • Dr Lorana Bartels

    The members have been appointed for three years until 30 June 2017.

    “I look forward to working with the three new members, Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker, Mr Martin Hockridge and Ms Louise Taylor, on the Law Reform Advisory Council, as well as the other members, who are being reappointed,” Mr Corbell said.

    “The council plays an integral role in developing law reform in the territory and responds to requests by me to advise on significant legal policy issues.”
